Soft, fluffy butter swim biscuits with golden, buttery edges. Made with six simple ingredients, these homemade buttermilk biscuits require no kneading, rolling, or biscuit cutters.

Ingredients

Scale

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

4 teaspoons baking powder

1 tablespoon sugar

2 teaspoons salt

2 cups buttermilk

1/2 cup butter, melted

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 400°F.

2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.

3. Pour buttermilk into the dry ingredients. Gently mix until combined, being careful not to overmix.

4. Pour melted butter into an 8×8-inch baking dish.

5. Spoon biscuit dough into the melted butter and spread evenly throughout the dish.

6. Using a butter knife, score the dough into three rows of squares before baking.

7. Bake for 25–27 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown.

8. Allow biscuits to rest for 5–10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Use an 8×8-inch baking dish for the intended biscuit thickness.

Avoid overmixing the dough to keep the biscuits tender.

Use fresh baking powder for the best rise.

The dough will be thick and sticky rather than firm enough to roll.

Allow the biscuits to rest for 5–10 minutes after baking.

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days.

Optional variation: Add shredded cheddar cheese or dried herbs to the dough for a savory flavor.
