A golden, flaky puff pastry bake filled with tender cabbage, sweet carrots, and a creamy mozzarella-Parmesan cheese sauce, seasoned with garlic and fresh herbs.
4 cups finely shredded green cabbage
2 medium carrots, grated
1 medium onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons butter, for vegetables
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon dried dill or 2 tablespoons fresh dill
1 teaspoon dried parsley
Salt and black pepper, to taste
2 tablespoons butter, for cheese sauce
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups milk
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg, optional
2 sheets frozen puff pastry, thawed
1 egg, beaten
Fresh dill, for garnish, optional
Sesame seeds, for garnish, optional
1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
2. Sauté onion in butter and olive oil for 3–4 minutes. Add garlic, cabbage, carrots, dill, parsley, salt, and pepper.
3. Cook for 8–10 minutes until tender and excess moisture evaporates. Drain if needed.
4. Melt butter for the sauce. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute.
5. Gradually whisk in milk and cook for 3–5 minutes until thickened.
6. Remove from heat and stir in mozzarella, Parmesan, garlic powder, and nutmeg.
7. Combine sauce with vegetables and let the filling cool slightly.
8. Place one puff pastry sheet in the baking dish. Spread filling evenly over it.
9. Cover with the second pastry sheet, seal edges, and cut small vents in the top.
10. Brush with beaten egg and bake for 35–40 minutes until golden and crisp.
11. Rest for 10 minutes, garnish if desired, slice, and serve warm.
Thaw puff pastry according to package directions.
Cook off excess moisture from the cabbage to prevent soggy pastry.
Cool the filling slightly before assembling.
For extra flavor, add sautéed mushrooms or fresh herbs.
Serve with a green salad or tomato soup.
Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Reheat in the oven to help restore pastry crispness.
